Where Are The MP3s?

This week's question comes from someone on the complete other side of the world; the Philippines. Now why aren't more questions coming from this side of the world? :-)

Q. How do I download old speeches from the http://ccf.org.ph web site?

A. Many websites operate according to the most simple of standards. Although there are some websites that use other methods, you should be able to use the following method for this web site.

- Right-click on the "Download MP3" link and then select "copy link location" or "copy shortcut" or something like that (depending on your browser), and then you can paste what you get from there. In this case you will get "http://hostingph.ccf.org.ph/~ccforgph/media/audio/mp3/051406.zip" and from there you can see that you can find the other older messages at "http://hostingph.ccf.org.ph/~ccforgph/media/audio/mp3". It's exactly the same path, you simply take off the name of the file which is 051406.zip in order to find path to the other files.

- Paste that into your browser and press enter. You will see all of the files listed on this page. From here you can right-click, hit "save-as", select the location you want to download the file to, and click "ok". ... It's like magic :-)

One Hundred Dollar Laptop

Hmm. I thought for sure that I had written about this already. I was very excited about it the first time that I saw it; perhaps I had simply emailed some friends about it. Ok well despite that error here is one of the most beautiful technology projects that I've seen in a long time.

Here is a laptop, with operating system, with USB, with wireless, and a host of other things for only one hundred dollars U.S. You see it right; only $100! It almost brings back the old Free Bytes inspiration for me. With this unit, we will finally have a strong hold on putting a computer in the hands of every child or low income individual on the planet. I know that will not solve everything because the desire that people to get what other's have is always changing, it's a moving object. And often technology isn't implemented for it's accessibility but rather it's profitability.

However still this, if used correctly, can be a beautiful thing. We'll just have to have the proper inspiration for it's use. Oh, and they are even looking at including a handcrank, or a foot pedal to generate power for it :-)

Tabbed Browsing for Internet Explorer

MyIE2 (also known as Maxthon) is incredible! I have been using it for two days now. Why would I ever use Internet Explorer 7 Beta version to get tabbed browsing, when you could simply download tried and true MyIE2.

Oh, and a little P.S. BTW. Just because this is nice on function doesn't mean that I'm abandoning Firefox as my primary recommendation for Internet Browsing. Although MyIE2 finally gives us all the functionality that we were looking for out of Internet Explorer, it 'is' still the #1 problem for spyware, malware, and a host of other problems. Sorry Microsoft, it's simply a fact!

Checking POP From Home

Today's Link of the Week features mail2web.com growing up and maturing. You might have heard me mention them on a show or two before because they were the cool way of checking your pop email addresses when you weren't at 'your' machine.

Well they have gotten cooler and now you can have your own free home page that you can configure. Everyone has a free homepage these days but the cool part here is that you can have all of your pop address configurations on this one. And mail2web.com doesn't stop there, you have a whole tab you can click on with 'free' services. So check it out.

Ok, I might should start calling this "Multiple Links of the Week". I'm not much for writing long detailed technical articles these days, but I sure do run across a boatload of cool things on the Internet. If you don't know what I mean, just check out my last few links of the week I've posted.

Backup Power

Ok, just call me the double tip of the week guy. I can't help it I'm on a writing spree. You've heard me on TV talking about backup solutions, even 'my' backup solution. As any good tech will tell you; backup backup backup. However amusingly many good techs are like the cobbler whose children have no shoes to wear :-)

Me? Well I'm a Smartsync Pro guy. I've used it for three and a half years now. There are hundreds of ways you can use it including have it back up a set of files, automatically zip those files up, and email those files to an address of your choice after the backup.

How do I use it? Well I have have two USB external 200 Gig drives which I use SmartSync to, you guessed it, "sync". Every night while I sleep Smartsync compares the contents of the two drives and syncronizes only the files that have changed.

'No' special files formats to fitz with. One drive goes down, I start to use the other while I wait for the other drive to be mailed to me. It was very nice to have that handy two years ago when one drive failed. Oh, and I should also say that being able to unplug one of my USB drives and take it with me is great too. Even if the drive is damaged or stolen in public I don't have to be concerned with loosing more than one day of data. Well, and my precious two hundred gig drive too .

Edit PDF Files

Have you ever ever wanted to edit a .pdf file but didn't know how? Well then this smaill tip is for you. I just downloaded and tested PDF Editor 2.4 and I was impressed that it could do exactly what it said it did.

Now I wasn't so fortunate as those of you that are reading this article. A few years ago I bought the full version of Adobe PDF Creator which cost me a pretty penny. Yes if you've researched it yourself you can see that it is about two hundred and fifty smackolas. And tell you the truth, though Adobe's PDF Creator does a whole lot more than the PDF Editor that I downloaded, I've truly never used any of the other features.

So, if what you have a document you need to change that you no longer have the original to, or if you want to save time by using only one program to edit your document, then this one is for you. You can try it out for free and it's $79.00 to buy. Compared to Adobe's product it is 'truly' worth the value. So check it out!
